Hello everyone!
My name is Alex Brohman, Registered Physiotherapist, and I am truly beyond excited to provide Physiotherapy services, near you, in the Walkerton community and surrounding areas including Mildmay, Hanover, Cargill, Durham, Ripley, Paisley and beyond!
I have been practicing physiotherapy since 2018 and I absolutely love what I do. If you are wondering what physiotherapy is, please take a quick glance below to learn the areas of my practice and how I can help you feel your best:
Orthopaedic Physiotherapy
Orthopedic physiotherapy focuses on assessing, treating, and rehabilitating injuries and conditions affecting the bones, joints, muscles, ligaments, and tendons. It helps restore mobility, reduce pain, improve strength, and enhance overall function after issues such as fractures, sprains, post-surgical recovery, or chronic musculoskeletal conditions. This is a very general overview, so here are just a few examples of situations where physiotherapy can be beneficial:
- You’ve had sore and achy knees for what feels like your entire life, and now you’ve heard from your doctor that you have findings of osteoarthritis on your X-ray but aren’t sure what activities are going to help
- Your shoulder has been so sore out of seemingly nowhere, and now you’re noticing you can’t reach up as high as you used to and reaching behind you is super painful- you’ve heard friends mention it could be frozen shoulder or a torn rotator cuff and you aren’t sure where to go from here
- You tripped on ice getting out of your car and ended up with an ankle fracture that required surgery. Your specialist gives you a referral for physiotherapy to start therapeutic exercise
- Your back has been bothering you for about a month and you’re starting to get anxious you hear terms like sciatica or degenerative disc disease. Your wondering what the best way to keep moving is and need some help
- You’ve gone for a bone density scan and find out you have osteoporosis – you’re wondering how you can keep active and maintain your bone health for as long as possible
For all of the above conditions (and many more not listed), physiotherapy can be an important part of your care team to improve your symptoms and keep you moving.
Vestibular Physiotherapy
This is an area of practice that many people don’t know exists- but now you can find it, near you, right here, in WALKERTON! Vestibular physiotherapy focuses on diagnosing and treating dizziness, vertigo, balance issues, and other disorders related to the inner ear and vestibular system. It uses targeted exercises to retrain balance, reduce dizziness, improve gaze stability, and help individuals regain confidence and stability in daily activities. It can be helpful to understand how this might look and feel with these few examples:
- You woke up one morning and rolled out of bed only to find the room is spinning around you and you can’t tell up from down. You go to the Emergency Department and after examination have been told you have BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo)
- You get sick with a virus and after recouping, you’re left with sensations of dizziness. You speak to your doctor about this and you’ve been told it could be vestibular neuritis – Your teenage son takes a big bodycheck during his hockey game and has immediate symptoms of dizziness, nausea, and balance issues. He’s pulled from the game and you take him to the Emergency Department and he’s diagnosed with a concussion. After a few days he’s feeling better, but has some lingering neck pain, fatigue, and still feels off balance.
*It’s important to note that any dizziness or vertigo MUST be assessed by a physician before seeking physiotherapy treatment as there are many medical causes to these symptoms that require clearance first.
Pelvic Health (Floor) Physiotherapy
I’m thrilled to also be the newest addition to the Pelvic Health team at The WOMB Bruce County! Pelvic health physiotherapy focuses on assessing and treating conditions related to the pelvic floor muscles, pelvis, and surrounding structures. It addresses issues such as pelvic pain, incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, pain with intercourse, prenatal or postpartum concerns, and changes that may arise during perimenopause and menopause. Through tailored exercises, education, and hands-on techniques, pelvic health physiotherapy helps restore function, reduce discomfort, and improve overall pelvic well-being.
It should be said that orthopedic and pelvic health are two areas of practice that are often intertwined, via the following examples:
- You’ve had some lingering back pain that has been on and off ever since you gave birth a few years ago. You’ve also had some occasional bladder leakage since then, but thought that was normal after having a baby and didn’t realize the link with your back pain.
- You’ve had hip pain that isn’t “responding” to regular physiotherapy treatment and have struggled with pain during intimacy but thought this was just “the way it is” for some people.
All of this to say that Physiotherapy is here to help YOU. I always aim to take a whole person approach to my treatment and consider the many aspects of your life that could be playing a role in your symptoms. I also want you to understand the “why” (not just the “what”) when I’m recommending a particular intervention, exercise, or referral to a team member- that way you can be actively engaged in your recovery and achieve the best results!
